Right: it's the version for .FI of the do-it-yourself package that I compiled in 1986 and sent to all EUnet backbone sites. I still have that package: see attachment. Like old soldiers, old stuff never dies. ;-) Piet ------------------------------------------------------------------- 8 April 1986 Dear Hostmaster, This cover letter is to provide some background concerning the application by our institution to establish and administer the .NL domain for The Netherlands. The Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica* (CWI) is a prominent center for mathematics and computer science research in The Netherlands. CWI is an independent, non-profit research institute sponsored by the Dutch government. For some time now the Center has been actively involved in providing network services and consultation to a variety of communities. We are actively participating in the design and implementation of several large networks in The Netherlands and Europe. CWI (as the UUCP host "mcvax") has a central role in EUNET, the European part of the UUCP network and is currently the major gateway for Europe to the USA, Australia, Japan and Israel for both mail and news via the UUCP network, using the public telephone and X.25 networks as carriers. We are actively exploring other networking areas including more extensive X.25 usage, higher level protocols (e.g. X.400) and specialized and/or dedicated networking links. We currently serve as the Network Information Center for a campus sized research community in Amsterdam, where we operate a TCP/IP based internet with 10 separate networks connected by IP gateways. Our previous experience, current networking leadership and semi-governmental nature place us in an excellent position to organize and maintain the .NL domain for The Netherlands. We maintain close working relationships with a number of U.S. Internet sites which will facilitate our maintaining .NL domain information accessible to Internet connected sites. ------- * Translated: Center for Mathematics and Computer Science, and formerly known as the Mathematisch Centrum. Should you wish to inquire further about the CWI and its activities, please feel free to contact us directly. We have also listed a couple of references who have experience with our networking activities as they might relate to the DOD Internet community. [A copy of this letter and application are also being sent by conventional paper mail along with a copy of our annual report.] Respectfully, P. C. Initially this domain and its subdomains will be used only for mail, but may eventually participate in other Internet services. The NL domain will be the top level domain for all hosts within The Netherlands. There will be an immediate imposition of a set of second level domain names probably similar to those used in the United Kingdom. Please establish NIC "whois" database entries for the Administrator and Technical liasons listed below. They do not have NIC-Idents at this time. 1) The name of the top level domain to join. (root domain) 2) The name, title, mailing address, phone number, and organization of the administrative head of the organization... Our servers will be existing nameservers supplied with the additional information necessary to serve the NL domain. They are already operational and will have the necessary zone information April 30, 1986. The first two servers will be UNIX machines running the BIND nameserver (named). The NIC may also be a server if they wish. 7) A description of the server machines, including: SEISMO.CSS.GOV: VAX-11/780 and UNIX, 10.0.0.25 on ARPANET 192.5.11.5 on CSS-RING 192.12.25.5 on CSS-GRAMINAE AOS.BRL.MIL: VAX-11/780 and UNIX, 128.20.1.2 on BRLNET 192.5.22.82 on BRLNET2 192.5.25.82 on BRLNET5 (note: AOS.BRL.MIL is already a root domain server) 8) An estimate of the number of hosts that will be in the domain.
